New! Plant-Based Water Bottles
New! Plant-Based Water Bottles
We’ve teamed up with mountainFLOW, a like-minded company leading the charge to reduce
the outdoor industry’s reliance on petroleum-based products.

Adventure-Ready, Planet-Friendly
Made from 95% sugarcane—a carbon-negative material—these new bottles help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels while delivering the same durability and performance our guests expect. Now offered on Biking and Multi-Adventure Trips

Backing Better Gear
We’re working with mountainFLOW, a certified B Corp, to fund research that advances sustainable product design and drives innovation in petroleum-free gear for the great outdoors.
Leading the Way in Composting
In 2024, Backroads staff across seven US regions—from Alaska to Canyonlands—led the launch of our composting pilot program to reduce food waste and lower our carbon footprint. Using a mix of municipal and private services, The Mill (an innovative kitchen composter) and other solutions, our teams helped lay the foundation for a greener operational future.
In 2025, this program expanded to all of our Field Staff Housing and Warehouses across North America!
From Commutes to Carbon Counts
From Commutes to Carbon Counts
We promote sustainable lifestyles in our offices worldwide by incentivizing low-impact commuting and offering robust compost and recycling services. Now we’re taking the next step: measuring and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions from our facilities and expanding waste reduction efforts to strengthen our impact and accountability.

The Greener Way In
Through our Flex Plan benefit, employees can use pretax earnings for any mode of public transportation—and Backroads chips in to help cover the ride!

Less Waste, More Action
We manage waste responsibly through composting and recycling programs across our hubs (where available), and we’re rolling out even more initiatives to improve and expand our efforts.

Positive Energy
Our Berkeley office rooftop solar system reduced the CO2 emissions of our operations by 14 tons in 2024. In 2025, we're expanding our accountability by measuring and sharing greenhouse gas emissions data from all our facilities.
